In the historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Diaochan assists the official Wang Yun in a plot to persuade Lu Bu to kill his foster father, the tyrannical warlord Dong Zhuo. Wang Yun betrothes Daiochan to Lu Bu and at the same time presents her to Dong Zhuo as a concubine. Diaochan uses her beauty and the two men’s love for her to incite jealousy.
